The HBCU Guide: 100+ Things to Know (and a Few Other Things You Need to Do)!

The HBCU Guide is a fun and enlightening manual that will equip current and prospective students with valuable tips for successfully handling the HBCU (historically black college or university) experience. From cafeteria food to Greek life, author Robin M. May, with input from college students and alumni from around the country, has compiled a list of things to know that will surely ring true for students at HBCU institutions:

  • Never date two men or two women in the same fraternity or sorority
  • Always wear flip-flops in the bathroom
  • “Freestyle” for your first year, if necessary
  • Do not get sucked into the credit card promotions
  • Purchase at least one dry-clean-only business suit for your interviews

These are just a few of the tips in The HBCU Guide that will prepare collegians for student life, taking up residence, the academic experience, personal growth, money matters, and getting started down a career path. Knowing that the African-American college experience is unique, May has put together a light-hearted yet informative guide that will help turn an average student into a great one. 5An Essential Resource  Aug 16, 2005
This guide is a great resource to set expectations for the HBCU experience. It is a very easy read and captures one's interest from cover to cover. I highly recommend to anyone planning to attend college, anyone attending college, or anyone who knows someone attending college.

5A Must have!  Aug 11, 2005
This book is a great gift for someone who is considering attending an Historical Black College or University or for one who is already attending one. It is light, funny and yet truthful and will be a yearly gift for friends and family who are high school seniors and/or graduates.

4Worthy Read  Aug 06, 2005
I think this a great tool for any college student, from a freshman to a senior. With all the reading the average student will do, it's good to have something practical to help them through all the surprises and the rough spots. A must read for any college student, parent, or anyone who justs want to help a student they know. And if you didn't get the chance to attend an HBCU, read this book and you'll feel like you did!

5Now I know...  Aug 05, 2005
I graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 1998 and I experienced just about everything Mrs. May writes about in her book. I had a great experience, however it would have been even better if I had known "what" to expect.

5The EXPERIENCE  Aug 04, 2005
I am on my way out of my EXPERIENCE and with all the good and bad things that have happened, I wouldn't trade any of it for anything. Who knows who I'd be or where I'd be if not for my years spent at CAU in ATL. This book encapsulates what it is to be a HBCU student! Great tips every student should know.
