Story of Change May 15, 2008 This story appeals to a large audience. I personally think both greeks and non greeks can benefit. For non-greeks this story gives information in an informal understanding as to why we have a Black Fraternal System and will always need it. This is a story of motivation, bringing change and even more evolving the Black community to greater achievements. This book also motivates black men to dream, to have courage when face with adversities and initiate change. I thought there could have been a little more details (not with regards to fraternity information). Also someone that states what happened with the founders and brief information on the Fraterity, like motto, mission etc.
Great Book! Jan 20, 2007 This book goes into the inner history of Alpha Phi Alpha and it will leave you wanting to learn more. I already knew the 'surface history of the fraternity, but this book has really given me another point of view that i havent had. I am an aspirant and it has opened my mind. I reccomend this to any aspirant to Alpha Phi Alpha
Transcends All... Jan 05, 2007 This was definately an exceptional story... One that is related for members and non-members alike as the founders of this great fraternity moved to create a brotherhood that would develop boys to men and men to leaders. If you are interested in getting into the minds of 9 college men who dared to dream only one generation removed from slavery, then this is definately the book for you!
Darrius has done a fascinating job in telling the story from the perspective of the 7 men who made the dream a reality. We may not be able to go back 100 years, but this will place you there in spirit!!!!

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! Jan 04, 2007 Is it possible to actually be transformed in time back to 1905 and 1906? The answer is a resounding YES! That is exactly what Darrius Jerome Gourdine does with this masterpiece. You can tell that the subject matter was thoroughly researched and Gourdine presents it in a most commanding manner. As you turn each page, you are actually transformed back in time and able to visualize each scenario and character. You become one with the story. This is a must read for any man aspiring to join Alpha Phi Alpha and also serves as a timely reminder for all Alphas of how we came into being and what we must do to as we have now entered our second century of existence. It would well serve the entire Black Greek community, also, as Alpha served as the role model for which their organizations came into existence.
One always takes pride in the organization(s) to which he/she belongs, but once one has read "JEWELS", that appreciation and pride is taken to a higher level. You might say of course another Alpha would have that opinion but it really does go far beyond that. Reading "JEWELS" ignites a fire and a deeper passion in one and that is easily transferrable to whatever organization(s) one belongs to. "JEWELS" shows what can actually be achieved when there is determination, commitment and a sense of purpose.

The Jewels Dec 20, 2006 I'm not sure exactly what non-members hope to gain from this account, but it really won't be much in the way of secrets being exposed. This is supposed to be an account of how the fraternity was founded, but there are no distiguisable voices from the "Jewels". The dialogue was rather flat, but members of the organization should enjoy it as it is written by one of their own.
